Lodge and Flying Centre
Bitterwasser Lodge is situated on the edge of the Kalahari, approximately 170 km southeast of Windhoek. The farm takes its name from the bitter-tasting rainwater found in the large salt pan. For decades, Bitterwasser has been renowned primarily as an international gliding center; thanks to its exceptional thermal conditions, it ranks among the best gliding locations in the world. Numerous national and international records have been set here, cementing its legendary reputation among glider pilots.
Accommodation at Bitterwasser
The history of Bitterwasser began in the 1950s when farmer and glider pilot Peter Kayssler discovered the large salt pan as a natural airfield. The "Diamond Farm" soon developed into an international meeting place for glider pilots. Its name refers not to precious stones, but to the "Diamonds" awarded for outstanding flying achievements. Since 1972, each of these accomplishments has been commemorated by planting a palm tree, creating the now-famous Palm Avenue. After Kayssler's death, the farm was taken over by a group of European glider pilots and gradually developed into the modern lodge and aviation centre it is today.
The lodge accommodates up to 80 guests. Visitors can choose between traditional rondavels, air-conditioned bungalows with spacious living and sleeping areas, and rooms in the Palm House and the Farm House. The bungalows feature private bathrooms, small kitchenettes and shaded terraces beneath thatched roofs. Wi-Fi is available both in the accommodation units and in the restaurant, while an emergency power supply ensures a high level of comfort even during power outages.
At the heart of the lodge is the spacious restaurant with its large outdoor terrace overlooking the palm trees and the surrounding landscape. A cosy lounge area invites guests to relax with a book or a drink, while the swimming pool offers welcome refreshment on hot days. Mature eucalyptus trees surrounding the lodge provide pleasant shade and contribute to the tranquil atmosphere.
Activities and tours at Bitterwasser
There is plenty to discover beyond aviation. Nature drives through the Kalahari reveal giraffes, zebras, springbok, wildebeest and ostriches, while guided walks introduce visitors to the region's distinctive dune landscape with its fine red sand. Particularly memorable are the sundowner excursions to the surrounding dunes, when the sun sets behind the Palm Avenue and the clear night sky unfolds above the Kalahari.
