Etambura Camp is a true hidden gem! Namibia’s first lodge owned by the Ovahimba is situated on a hill near the sacred Ojuva plains, where wildlife and livestock of the semi-nomadic Himba people come together. The camp is located about 25 km north of the small settlement of Orupembe. Access is via challenging 4×4 tracks, which already highlights the special character of this place: remote, untouched, and far away from classic tourist routes.

Accommodation at Etambura Camp
Natural materials, elevated wooden platforms, and organic architectural forms ensure that the camp blends almost invisibly into its surroundings. Its exposed location creates a sense of vastness and tranquillity, further enhanced by the deliberate absence of Wi-Fi.
The camp offers only five thatched tented chalets with a sleeping area, bathroom, and private terrace, spread out along the ridge of the hill. The design combines modern comfort with traditional elements of Himba culture.
The central meeting point is an open-plan communal area with a lounge and a viewing platform. In the separate kitchen and barbecue area of the camp, crockery, cutlery, and cooking utensils are freely available. There are also central fire pits and braai (barbecue) facilities, as well as assistance from staff, for example with lighting fires or washing up. On request, freshly prepared meals are offered, including traditional Himba dishes.
Activities and tours at Etambura Camp
Activities include guided 4×4 tours into the remote Kunene region with its dry riverbeds and spectacular landscapes. Game drives in the Orupembe Conservancy offer, with some luck, sightings of rare desert-adapted species such as black rhinos. The experience is complemented by hikes along the hill, showcasing diverse endemic flora, as well as authentic encounters with the local Himba community, providing insights into their traditional way of life and culture.
