Kaoko Mopane Lodge is located in northern Namibia, about 6 km southeast of Opuwo, the capital of the Ovahimba people. Nestled beneath shady mopane trees on the edge of an ancient dry riverbed, this family-run lodge combines natural tranquility with modern comfort. The landscape of open plains, wild grasses and the distant mountains of the Kunene region immediately creates a sense of remoteness and authenticity upon arrival. Kaoko Mopane Lodge is ideally situated on the route to the Epupa Falls and into the Kaokoveld.

Accommodation at Kaoko Mopane Lodge
The lodge was taken over by the Schoeman family, who have been closely connected to the region for many years. Parts of the property were constructed using recycled materials such as wood and metal elements, and the entire lodge operates on solar power. A large vegetable garden with a greenhouse supplies herbs, vegetables and fruit for the kitchen, complemented by the lodge’s own chickens providing fresh eggs. In addition, part of the revenue generated through so-called conservancy fees is directed towards projects supporting the Himba communities of the region.
Guests can choose from twelve luxurious rooms equipped with a private terrace, en-suite bathroom, refrigerator, coffee station, mosquito net and water cooler. The terraces overlook the dry riverbed, where numerous bird species can be observed during the day. The accommodation options are complemented by seven private campsites beneath mopane trees, each with its own ablution facilities, hot water, electricity and barbecue area, as well as a separate overland camping section for larger travel groups. WiFi, restaurant, bar, swimming pool and 24-hour security service ensure a high level of comfort even in this remote part of Namibia.
Activities and tours at Kaoko Mopane Lodge
The lodge offers guided excursions to traditional Himba villages, where guests can gain insight into daily life, jewellery making and traditional customs. Guided walks to natural springs are also available; these springs have provided an essential source of water for the Himba people for generations. Additional tours lead to fossil fields and striking rock formations in the surrounding area, while day trips to the Epupa Falls are also popular among visitors.
