Kanaan Desert Retreat

Fantastic retreat close to the Tiras mountains

Kanaan Desert Retreat is set amidst 35,000 hectares of untouched wilderness in the Helmeringhausen region near the Tiras Mountains. Travelling along Namibia’s legendary dream road, the D707, from Lüderitz in the south or Sossusvlei in the north, visitors already experience the spectacular desert landscapes of the Namib and pass picturesque settlements such as Duwisib Castle along the way. Photographers and nature lovers especially appreciate the unique light conditions of the Namib and the exceptionally clear night skies for which Kanaan is internationally renowned.

Accommodation at Kanaan Desert Retreat

Guests can choose from eight luxurious canvas tents, all spaciously designed and equipped with en-suite bathrooms and private wooden decks. The tents overlook the vast desert landscape and a nearby waterhole. The lodge also offers eight individual campsites with private ablution facilities, barbecue areas and shaded shelters. The elevated main lodge area features a restaurant, lounge and bar with panoramic windows and sweeping views over the surrounding valleys and dunes. Homemade dishes and regional specialties are served in a stylish and relaxed atmosphere.

Activities and tours at Kanaan Desert Retreat

The retreat forms part of the N/a’an ku sê Ecotourism Collection and has undergone extensive ecological restoration since the former farm property was taken over in 2014. Today the reserve is home to oryx antelope, kudu, springbok, ostriches, black-backed jackals, bat-eared foxes, caracals and spotted hyenas. The reserve also supports research projects focusing on predator behaviour, wildlife monitoring and human-wildlife conflict management. All lodge proceeds contribute directly to the conservation and community initiatives of the N/a’an ku sê Foundation.

Activities include guided dune drives at sunrise or sunset, allowing guests to experience the ever-changing colours of the desert while observing free-roaming wildlife. Photographic safaris and professional photo excursions to some of the area’s most scenic locations are also highly popular. For more adventurous visitors, Kanaan offers exciting sand sailing experiences with blo-karting. As a recognised International Dark Sky Place, Kanaan also provides exceptional opportunities to experience one of the world’s most spectacular night skies.
