Explore the Namib Desert

During a time span of five hours Fanie explains the Namib Desert around the Kuiseb Delta south of Walvis Bay. Of course guests receive an introduction to the exiting dune driving on environmental friendly quad bikes, which are easy to handle and can be driven without licence from the age of 12 thanks to their automatic transmission.

Apart from the exciting „up-and-down-the-dune“ experience, during which guests are informed about the different forms and colours of the dunes, the focus lies on getting to know the history of the Namib Desert and it’s human population, the Topnaars.

Petrified tracks are bear witness that some centuries ago humans must have lived in this arid landscape, conquering the desert. Through their ancient knowledge some Topnaar families are still able to survive, by making use of water-retaining plants like for example the !Nara Melon. During the tour a Topnaar family is visited, who talks and explains about living on the edge of the Namib Desert.

Also other inhabitants of the Namib have left their tracks, which are now petrified. The rock-hard loamy soil proves that some decades ago Elephants, Rhinos and various other have migrated along the Kuiseb. With a bit of luck you can also see some live animals with Fanie, such as the rare brown hyena and African wild cat, the elephant shrew, oryx, springbok, ostriches and more.

Also the Bushmen, indigenous inhabitants of southern Africa have left their tracks in form of conserved ostrich egg shells, which they used as water containers.
