The original seal whisperer

For many years now dozens of dolphin-, seal – and boat trip providers in Walvis Bay have enthralled their guest. The competition is growing and every provider tries to find a niche. Some catamarans are specially adapted for kids, others have accessible toilets for handicapped guests others cater for large groups, which won’t fit onto the small boats.

Everything started with Levo Tours and the founder Ottmar, the seal whisperer. He was the first one to have a Cape Fur Seal jumping into his boat in 1990, which gave him the idea that this could also be an attraction for tourists. Levo Tours set the standard, Levo is the original and the skippers still run the tours with the same enthusiasm as ever. Levo’s speciality is its personal touch and its humour!

Spotty, the seal

The Levo tours start at 09:00 am. At the landing stage Spotty the seal is already waiting for fresh fish from skipper Johan or Wilmarie. Shortly after casting off Spotty jumps on board to get caressed by the guests and to repeatedly barter for payment in return for shots taken together with him.

Meanwhile the skipper provides detailed information on everything interesting: the harbour town Walvis Bay, the South African seals, the pelicans, the cormorants, the seagulls, ships passing by, oil platforms anchoring nearby, the ice cold Benguela current, numerous oyster platforms and much more.

Dolphins and Humpback Whales

The tour continues to Pelican Point, the tip of a long sand bar, which forms the Lagoon of Walvis Bay and where one of Namibia’s impressive seal colonies waits to be photographed. With some luck sun fish and ocean turtles can be viewed. Afterwards guests are taken to the open ocean where frequently Heavyside dolphins, Bottlenosed dolphins and – during the Namibian winter – sometimes even Humpback whales can be spotted.

After having had ‚a joll‘ with the dolphins and after having photographed a lot of water and very few dolphins the tour returns to the Walvis Bay Lagoon where in calm waters snacks are served including oysters and sparkling wine. At 01:00 pm everyone is returned safely on land.

This trip will be long remembered!
