Highlights in the Sossusvlei region
This page provides an overview of activities, highlights and sights of the Sossusvlei region, one of the trade marks in Namibia. The large Namib Naukluft Park offers exciting destinations, for example the Sossusvlei with the world's highest sand dunes or the dead vlei, a clay pan with hundreds camelthorn tree skelettons. Several unique guided Hiking Trails can be done in the Sossusvlei region. Furthermore the Sesriem Canyon and the Duwisib Castle are worth a visit.
Duwisib Castle
A middle age castle in Namibia: Many tourists will rub their eyes: like a mirage a castle made from red sandstone emerges from the surrounding desert. Defence tower and battlements and the impression of a middle age castle have been least expected.
Hot Air Ballooning
With Namib Sky Ballooning Safaris you have the unique possibility to fly over the oldest desert of the world in a hot air balloon during the cool hours of the early morning. It is a fantastic experience and exhilarating feeling to watch the sunrise in the Namib Desert from a hot air balloon.
Namib Naukluft Park
The Namib Naukluft Park is an ecologically protected area and was proclaimed in August 1979. The Park has an area of 49,800 km² and at the time of proclamation it was the largest protected area in Namibia.
NamibRand Nature Reserve
The NamibRand Nature Reserve developed from a vision. A German-Namibian business man from Windhoek, Mr J.A. Brückner started to purchase several sheep farms in the foothills of the Namib Desert in 1984. He had noticed that the land was completely out of its ecologic balance due to excessive pasture farming.
Olive Trail
The very diversified "Olive Trail" in the Naukluft Mountains is recommended for all hiking eager travelers not scared of heights. Breathtaking views, impressive scenery and a special kind of surprise at the end of the trail guarantee an unforgettable experience.
Sesriem Canyon
At Sesriem a visit to the nearby Sesriem Canyon is recommendable. The Sesriem Canyon is about 1 km long and 30 metres deep, carved into the rock by the Tsauchab River, which ends its course in the Sossusvlei.
Sossusvlei and Deadvlei
The largest sand dunes of the world: In the middle of the Namib Desert, in the Namib Naukluft Park two of Namibia’s scenic highlights can be found: the Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei
Sossusvlei Scenic Flights

Solitaire
Many tourists use Solitaire as a stopover en route to or from Sesriem and the Sossusvlei. It is situated in a very sparsely populated area close to the Namib Naukluft Park at the crossing of two important roads: the C14 from Walvis Bay to Bethanien and the C24 from Rehoboth to Sossusvlei.
Tok Tokkie Trail
Another jewel among Namibia’s walking trails is the 3 day/2 nights Tok Tokkie Trail. It is a guided trail that takes place in the stunning NamibRand Nature Reserve in the arguably most beautiful part of the Namib Desert.
Waterkloof Trail
For visitors who love being active during their holiday in Namibia the “Waterkloof Trail” is really recommendable. The 17 kilometre long trail winds along small creeks of the Naukluft Mountains in the Namib Naukluft Park, and leads through beautiful, varying landscapes.
