Waterberg region
Waterberg region in Namibia
The region around the Waterberg, including the town Otjiwarongo and the Hochfeld area are ideally situated for travellers on the way from Windhoek to the north and to the Etosha National Park. The Waterberg Mountain forms the centre of the region and is one of the main attractions of Namibia. It is an impressive table mountain, geologically and historically of great interest. Part of Waterberg plateau are covered by the Waterberg Plateau Park, an important nature conservation area. The bordering farms often make their living from commercial cattle farming. Numerous farms are also hunting and guest farms.
Climate of the Waterberg Region
For Namibian conditions the Waterberg receives quite a lot of rain – about 400 mm annually. The precipitation received directly at the mountain seeps into the porous sand stone until it reaches impermeable clay layers deeper down. At these layers the water emerges from the mountain and forms natural springs.
Flora and Fauna at the Waterberg
The abundance of water results in a lush vegetation around the Waterberg. Consequently a diverse wildlife population is also found around the mountain. Directly on top of the plateau rhino, buffalo, roan antelope, giraffe, baboons, Damara dikdik and many more can be found.
