Discover Namibia on your own with a rental car

Namibia, with its endless roads, dramatic desert landscapes, and impressive wildlife, is a country best explored at your own pace. While guided tours can be rewarding, many travelers opt for the freedom and flexibility that a self-drive rental offers. Whether you want to experience the gentle dunes of Sossusvlei, the rugged beauty of Damaraland, or the wildlife-rich plains of Etosha National Park, having your own rental vehicle in Namibia allows you to shape your journey entirely to your own preferences.

Here is a comprehensive guide to car rental in Namibia to help you make well-informed decisions.

Why explore Namibia with a rental car?

Namibia is one of the safest countries in Africa and very easy and comfortable to explore as a self-driver. This is why Namibia is considered the ideal beginner’s destination for Africa.

The roads are well developed and signposted, the crime rate is low, and traffic is light (in fact, five vehicles waiting at a traffic light are already considered a traffic jam here). Compared to many other African countries, driving in Namibia is far from chaotic. There are thousands of campsites, lodges, and guesthouses to visit. Everywhere, exciting highlights follow one another, and the availability of supplies (food, fuel, postcards) is excellent throughout most of the country—especially by African standards—with only a few exceptions.

In Namibia, you can refuel almost anywhere.

A self-drive journey in your own rental car offers the following

  1. Flexibility and independence: You can plan your trip yourself, for example using this online trip planner. Alternatively, we can help you tailor the journey to your individual preferences, without being bound by the fixed itineraries of guided safaris.
  2. Access to remote areas: Public transport in Namibia is almost nonexistent or not very reliable. Some of the country’s most important and beautiful sights are located in remote regions. With a rented 4x4 vehicle, you can reach all these places and don’t have to miss out on any of the many national parks, game reserves, and other wilderness areas.
  3. Comfort and convenience: Having your own rental vehicle provides comfort on long drives and allows you to bring all the essentials you need for your trip. Above all, a self-drive journey in Namibia lets you manage your time independently and enjoy the country’s highlights exactly the way you want.

Which type of rental car do we recommend for Namibia?

About 70% of roads in Namibia are gravel, and although most are well maintained, driving conditions can vary depending on weather and traffic.

  • Paved roads connect the main cities and are in excellent condition.
  • Gravel roads can be bumpy and dusty but are generally safe if you drive carefully.
  • Off-road tracks sometimes require advanced driving skills, especially in sandy or rocky terrain.

For Namibia, we always recommend a 4x4 vehicle. Whether your rental car needs to be a high-performance model (Toyota Hilux 4x4, Toyota Land Cruiser) or whether a Toyota Fortuner or smaller Suzuki Jimny will suffice depends on your chosen itinerary and the number of travelers. We are happy to advise you on the best option!

Our trusted car rental partners in Namibia

We prefer not to work with large international companies, as experience has shown that their backup services and equipment sometimes do not meet the expected standards. We work exclusively with smaller, professional car rental companies based in Namibia. All of these companies provide excellent and friendly customer service, as well as a reliable and efficient recovery service.

Frequently Asked Questions - Car Hire in Namibia

1. What type of car should I hire for Namibia?

We recommend booking a good off-road vehicle for traveling through Namibia. You should only do without a 4x4 if you are driving exclusively on tarred roads between cities in Namibia, which is mainly relevant for business travelers. As soon as you want to explore the Namib dunes, Etosha National Park, or any of Namibia’s other highlights, a 4x4 is highly advisable. It simply makes you more robust on the road. In short: A 4x4 offers greater safety, better comfort, and more flexibility.

2. Do I need an international driver’s license?

If your driver’s license is in English and has a photo, it is generally accepted. If not, it’s recommended to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to your local license.

3. What is the minimum age to rent a car in Namibia?

The minimum age is usually 21 years, but some rental companies require drivers to be 23–25 years old. Young driver surcharges may apply for drivers under 25.

4. What are the speed limits in Namibia?

In Namibia, the following speed limits apply: 120 km/h on tarred roads, 100 km/h on gravel roads, and 60 km/h in towns. Here are the details:

  • 120 km/h on tarred roads
  • 100 km/h on most gravel roads, however, we recommend driving only 80 km/h on gravel
  • 60 km/h in towns and villages

Always adjust your speed to road and weather conditions. Gravel roads, even if they look good, can be slippery and unpredictable.

5. How safe is driving in Namibia?

Driving is really safe, but there are important things to keep in mind:

  • Be well-rested: Roads are often long, remote, and unpaved. It can be tiring to drive on Namibian roads., so always make sure to be well rested.  That is also why we recommend to stay the first night in Windhoek after a long flight.
  • Be aware of wildlife and livestock: Animals, both wild and domesticated frequently cross roads, especially at dusk or dawn.
  • Headlights on: In Namibia, it is mandatory to switch on the front headlights during the day when driving outside of towns. Failure to do so may result in a fine.
  • Avoid night driving: Most car hire companies do not allow driving at night.

6. How available is fuel in Namibia?

Fuel stations are found in all towns but distances between them can be very long. In remote areas (e.g., Kaokoland, Skeleton Coast, Khaudum, etc), fuel may be scarce.

  • Always fill up whenever you can.
  • Carry cash (Namibian Dollar or South African Rand) as some stations don’t accept cards. However, most of them do.
  • For remote trips, carry an extra jerrycan of fuel.

7. Do I need special insurance for car hire in Namibia?

Yes, basic insurance is usually included, but you should check:

  • Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) – limits your liability in case of damage.
  • Tyre and windscreen cover – highly recommended as gravel roads cause frequent damage.
  • Extended or Super Cover – reduces your excess (the amount you pay in case of damage).

We are glad to help you, finding the best insurance solution for your needs.

8. Can I take my rental car across the border to other countries?

Yes, many car hire companies allow cross-border travel to Botswana, South Africa, Zambia, or Zimbabwe, but you need prior permission and the correct paperwork. Additional cross-border fees apply. Always confirm with your rental company or with us beforehand.

9. What should I do in case of a breakdown or accident?

Most car rental companies provide 24-hour roadside assistance. The car hire companies of our choice have very good backup services.

  • In case of an accident, contact your rental company immediately.
  • Always get a police report, as it will be required for insurance claims.
  • Never abandon the vehicle; wait for assistance.

10. What documents do I need to rent a car?

You will need a driver's license, a passport and a credit card:

  • A valid driver’s license / International drivers licence if your license is not in English.
  • A passport as proof of identity
  • A credit card in the driver’s name for deposit and payment

11. What about tyre punctures?

Tyre punctures are not un-common on gravel roads. All rental cars come with at least one spare tyre. Rental companies will brief you on how to handle tyre issues. We do not recommend to us tyre repair kits, if you don't have any experience. However, there is tyre repair possibility in almost every little town in Namibia.

If you go for remote travel, you will need at least 2 spare tyres.

12. Is GPS or navigation necessary?

Road signs in Namibia are generally clear, but in remote areas, signage can be sparse. A GPS or offline map app is strongly recommended. For very remote expeditions, consider a satellite phone.

13. Are one-way rentals possible?

Yes, most companies allow one-way rentals between Windhoek, Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, or even cross-border, but one-way fees may apply.

14. What should I carry with me while driving in Namibia?

When exploring Namibia on your own in a Rental Car, you should definitely carry the following things:

  • Driver’s license and rental documents
  • Enough fuel and water (at least 5–10 liters per person per day in desert regions)
  • One or two spare tyres
  • Cash for fuel and park fees
  • Mobile phone or satellite phone in remote areas
