Erongo region
The Erongo Region in central-western Namibia is an ideal stop-over for everyone on the way from Namibia’s capital Windhoek to Swakopmund in the west or the Etosha National Park in the north and the north western areas of the Damaraland or Kaokoveld.
Characteristics of the Erongo
The Erongo Region is a geological wonderland. Its centre is formed by the Erongo Mountains a 130 million year old volcanic ruin with breath taking rock formations and landscapes. Over thousands of years Magma, which cooled down subterraneously formed impressive natural scenarios dominated by massive granite boulders. Especially at dusk these landscapes offer beautiful photographic motives. The mountain range is also home to many interesting ancient rock paintings.
Flora and Fauna of the Erongo Region
Despite of the arid climate with little precipitation open water can be found deep in the rugged mountain range thus a diverse plant and wildlife is found here. Apart from various antelopes like kudus, oryx and klipspringers one will find mountain zebras, giraffes, baboons and leopards. Black Rhino has been reintorduced into the Erongo Rhino Sanctuary. A diverse flora is found in and outside of the Erongo crater.
