Alte Kalköfen Lodge in southern Namibia is located about 90 km west of Keetmanshoop, set within a vast and unspoiled desert landscape. Nestled on the edge of the dry Gurib riverbed, the lodge offers impressive views of acacia trees, reddish rock formations, and the quiet expanse of the semi-desert. Its name comes from historic lime kilns dating back to the 19th century, which are still preserved today and provide insight into the region’s early industrial use.

Accommodation at Alte Kalköfen Lodge
The lodge was created from a lovingly restored farmhouse and combines historic charm with comfortable, nature-oriented accommodation. Guests can choose from a variety of options, including freestanding bungalows, family rooms, and self-catering units. The offering is complemented by well-maintained campsites with private sanitary facilities. Many of the accommodations feature their own terraces, allowing uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscape. Particularly appealing is the combination of indoor and outdoor showers, enhancing the immersive nature experience.
At the heart of the property is the farmhouse with its restaurant, where regional and freshly prepared dishes are served. A swimming pool provides welcome relief on hot days, while cozy lounge areas invite guests to relax.
Activities and tours at Alte Kalköfen Lodge
There is no shortage of activities. Guests can enjoy guided walks and nature drives, gaining insights into the region’s flora and fauna. The surrounding area is ideal for birdwatching and offers a wide range of photographic opportunities. A special highlight is the illuminated waterhole near the lodge, where oryx antelopes, springbok, and numerous bird species can often be observed, especially in the early morning and evening hours. The remote location, far from larger settlements, also makes the lodge an excellent place for spectacular stargazing under a clear, almost untouched night sky.
Another botanical highlight is the so-called Cole Lithoparium, an extensive collection of lithops—also known as “living stones”—which are perfectly adapted to the extreme conditions of the desert.
