Garas Park Rest Camp
Camping north of Keetmanshoop
Garas Park Rest Camp is located about 20 km north of Keetmanshoop directly on the B1 and is one of the most unusual camps in southern Namibia. Surrounded by a landscape of granite boulders, quiver trees and aloes, it offers a fascinating blend of nature and art. The unique atmosphere becomes apparent as soon as visitors arrive: numerous sculptures made from a variety of materials line the entrance road, reflecting the creative spirit of the owner and giving the property its distinctive character.
Accommodation at Garas Park Rest Camp
The name "//Garas" originates from the Nama language and means "quiver tree". Fittingly, the property is home to an extensive quiver tree forest with hundreds of specimens of the iconic *Aloe dichotoma*, one of southern Africa's most famous plant species. The trees grow among ancient granite formations and, together with the surrounding succulents, create a striking landscape. The park is considered an attractive alternative to the better-known Quiver Tree Forest east of Keetmanshoop and welcomes both overnight guests and day visitors.
The rest camp was established by farmer Marian Hulme and has retained its original, nature-oriented character to this day. A total of nine campsites are available, harmoniously arranged between rocks and trees to provide plenty of privacy. Facilities are simple but well maintained and include clean ablution blocks with showers and toilets as well as water points. A small covered communal area offers a pleasant place to relax and provides shade from the intense daytime sun. Snacks, firewood and drinking water are available on site.
Activities and tours at Garas Park Rest Camp
The evening hours are particularly impressive when the setting sun bathes the granite rocks in warm colours and the quiver trees cast long shadows across the landscape. Many visitors use this time for leisurely walks through the park or to explore the rocky terrain on foot. The secluded location and minimal light pollution also create excellent conditions for stargazing. Birdwatchers will find a variety of species in the area, all well adapted to the arid habitats of southern Namibia.
