The Shametu River Lodge is situated directly on the banks of the Okavango River, approximately 6 km from Divundu and close to the Popa Falls. Its location between Botswana's Okavango Delta and Victoria Falls makes it an ideal stopover on a self-drive safari as well as an excellent base for exploring the water-rich Kavango Region. The nearby Mahango and Bwabwata National Parks can be reached within a short drive and are among the most wildlife-rich protected areas in northeastern Namibia.

Accommodation at Shametu River Lodge
The lodge enjoys sweeping views over the Okavango River and the rapids of the Popa Falls. Guests can choose from comfortable chalets and permanent safari tent chalets, all featuring en-suite bathrooms, seating areas, tea and coffee-making facilities, and private verandas. The spacious accommodation is nestled among the riverside vegetation, providing a peaceful atmosphere and a high degree of privacy. The lodge also offers well-maintained campsites with electricity, water connections, private ablution facilities, and kitchen areas, making them suitable for independent travellers, families, and groups alike.
Shared facilities include a restaurant serving a varied menu, a café, a bar, and a swimming pool overlooking the river. A spa is also available, offering relaxing treatments after a day of exploring the surrounding wilderness.
Activities and tours at Shametu River Lodge
The surrounding region is renowned for its exceptional birdlife, with several hundred recorded species, as well as its abundant wildlife. Visitors may encounter elephants, buffalo, antelope, giraffe, hippopotamus, crocodiles, and, with a bit of luck, a variety of predators.
The lodge places particular emphasis on environmentally responsible activities. Seasonal mokoro excursions are conducted using modern fibreglass boats, helping to reduce the need for traditional dugout canoes made from protected tree species and contributing to the conservation of natural resources. Additional activities include guided game drives in Mahango and Bwabwata National Parks, boat cruises on the Okavango River, and scenic sunset cruises. Anglers can enjoy fishing for tigerfish and several species of tilapia in the productive waters of the Okavango. Guided village visits provide fascinating insights into the traditional lifestyle of the Hambukushu community and illustrate the close relationship between the local people and the unique ecosystem of the Okavango River.
