Grootberg Lodge

Lodge in the Northern Damaraland

The Grootberg Lodge is a popular lodge in northern Damaraland and is 100% owned by the conservancy of the #Khoadi//Hoas community. It is spectacularly situated on the edge of the Etendeka Plateau with sweeping views over the Klip River Valley near Palmwag. The lodge was established with the support of the European Union and the Namibian Ministry of Environment and Tourism. As Namibia’s first mid-range lodge owned by a conservancy, it promotes sustainable tourism, creates jobs, and supports education and conservation projects for the local community.

Accommodation at Grootberg Lodge

The accommodation consists of 16 rock chalets stretching along the edge of the plateau, offering exceptional panoramic views directly from the private terrace or even from the bed. Guests can choose between comfortable double or twin chalets as well as spacious family units with two separate bedrooms. Built from natural stone and thatch, the rooms blend harmoniously into the surrounding landscape of Damaraland. Facilities include en-suite bathrooms, tea and coffee stations, desks, safes, and comfortable seating areas. The main building features a restaurant, lounge, bar, and an infinity pool overlooking the valley.

Activities and tours at Grootberg Lodge

The region is home to rare desert lions, black rhinos, and desert-adapted elephants. Guests can join rhino tracking excursions accompanied by experienced guides and trackers in search of black rhinos. Popular activities also include drives to observe desert-adapted elephants, sundowner excursions across the Etendeka Plateau, and guided walks through the Mopane savannah. Visitors interested in the local culture can explore traditional Damara villages and gain insight into the daily life of the local community. The lodge also offers professionally trained massage therapists providing a variety of massage treatments.
