Lodge in the Bwabwata National Park
Located in the heart of the original Zambezi region in north-eastern Namibia, the exclusive Kazile Island Lodge is set on a private island in the Kwando River. The lodge lies within Bwabwata National Park, part of the transboundary KAZA conservation area, regarded as the largest continuous wildlife conservation region in Africa. Guests reach the island exclusively by boat after arriving at the jetty approximately 11 km along the C49 road. Even the short crossing creates the feeling of entering an almost untouched wilderness.

Accommodation at Kazile Island Lodge
The lodge officially opened on 21 March 2017 – deliberately chosen to coincide with Namibia’s Independence Day. Together with the Mayuni Conservancy, African Monarch Journeys created a model that combines nature-based tourism with regional economic empowerment. Particularly noteworthy is the lodge’s involvement in the Sijwa Project, an initiative supporting local craftsmanship and sustainable recycling concepts.
The accommodation consists of 13 stylish luxury tents, each featuring an en-suite bathroom with shower, mosquito net, safe, and a private wooden deck overlooking the Kwando River or the vast floodplains surrounding the famous Horseshoe Lagoon. WiFi is available both in the guest tents and in the main lodge area. The lodge’s open architectural design intentionally integrates nature into daily life, accompanied by the sounds of numerous bird species and the nocturnal atmosphere of the African wilderness.
Activities and tours at Kazile Island Lodge
The region is renowned for its exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities. Predators such as lion and leopard, as well as large herds of buffalo and elephant, roam the floodplains and wetlands of Bwabwata National Park. These wetlands are also among the very few places in Namibia where the elusive sitatunga antelope can be observed.
Activities on offer include guided game drives, boat cruises on the Kwando River, and guided bush walks – a special feature, as only a few lodges within Bwabwata National Park are permitted to offer these guided walking safaris. Sundowner excursions to Horseshoe Lagoon are also available, offering spectacular sunsets across the waterways and wetlands of the Zambezi region.
