Campsite in the Erongo
The Erongo Plateau Camp is secluded in the heart of the Erongo Mountains, approximately 35 km west of Omaruru, and is accessible via the D2316. Perched on an elevated plateau, the camp offers sweeping views across the spectacular granite landscapes of the Erongo Massif and the surrounding plains. Formed around 130 million years ago by volcanic activity, the Erongo Massif is one of Namibia's most fascinating geological landmarks and is renowned for its dramatic granite domes and rugged scenery.
Accommodation at Erongo Plateau Camp
The camp was established in 1998 by Oliver and Conny Kayser on Farm Eileen, which is owned by the van Alphen family. From the very beginning, great care was taken to develop the campsite in harmony with its natural surroundings. Guests can observe the waterhole on the lower plateau directly from the campsite, where kudus and other wildlife are frequent visitors.
The camp features eight spacious camping sites, each set well apart from the others to ensure privacy and tranquillity. Every site is equipped with its own water supply, a braai area with a fire pit, and a shade net for protection from the sun. Guests have access to well-maintained private ablution blocks with hot and cold showers and toilets, while firewood is available for purchase at the camp. To preserve its peaceful and unspoilt atmosphere, the camp deliberately offers no electricity, swimming pool or shop.
Activities and tours at Erongo Plateau Camp
Erongo Plateau Camp offers several hiking trails of varying lengths, with trail maps available at the camp. These walks provide an excellent opportunity to encounter, with a bit of luck, Hartmann's mountain zebras, gemsbok (oryx), kudu, Damara dik-diks, steenbok and a wide variety of bird species. Brown hyenas, black-backed jackals, leopards and owls also inhabit the region, although they are rarely seen and are more often heard after nightfall. During the rainy season, natural pools in a nearby dry river offer a refreshing place to cool off. The surrounding landscape is also ideal for birdwatching and nature photography. Thanks to its remote location and the absence of artificial light, the camp is an outstanding destination for stargazing and relaxing evenings around the campfire beneath Namibia's crystal-clear night sky.
