Lodge and Game Reserve
Mount Etjo Safari Lodge is located approximately 220 km northwest of Windhoek within the 36,000-hectare Okonjati Game Reserve and is known as one of Namibia’s first private wildlife reserves. It was founded in 1975 by Jan Oelofse, who gained international recognition as the animal supervisor and handler for the Hatari! movie from 1962. His vision was to create a permanently protected habitat for a wide variety of African wildlife. The name “Etjo” means “place of refuge” and reflects the reserve’s long-standing conservation tradition.

The lodge offers a range of accommodation options, from standard rooms and spacious suites to family rooms, the exclusive Luxury Villa, and the secluded Elephant Lodge overlooking a waterhole. The property also features generously sized campsites set beneath shady trees with views of nearby watering points.
Facilities include an outdoor swimming pool, lounge, bar, curio shop, extensive gardens, and a lake-like waterhole directly in front of the lodge, where wildlife can frequently be observed. Guests can enjoy a hearty breakfast and a traditional safari-style dinner buffet featuring game specialties, fresh produce from the lodge’s organic garden, and homemade products.
Activities and tours at Mount Etjo Safari Lodge
The reserve is home to numerous rare wildlife species, including black rhinos, cheetahs, sable antelope, roan antelope, nyala, and lechwe. Active wildlife management helps maintain balanced populations while preserving the natural carrying capacity of the ecosystem. The reserve also contains the famous fossilized footprints of the Saurichnium damarense dinosaurs, first scientifically documented in the 1920s and now regarded as one of the region’s most remarkable natural attractions.
Popular activities include game drives through the reserve, guided rhino tracking on foot, birdwatching, and photographic excursions to specially designed observation hides. A particular highlight is the evening lion feeding, which can be viewed safely from a protected observation area. Additional experiences include bush picnics, visits to the fossilized dinosaur tracks, and a modern information centre that provides insights into the reserve’s wildlife, geology, history, and plant life.
