Okaukuejo is a large resort operated by the state-owned company “Namibia Wildlife Resorts” (NWR) in Etosha National Park, located near the southern Andersson Gate. Okaukuejo is famous for its floodlit waterhole, where numerous wild animals gather throughout the day and late into the night. Elephants, lions, giraffes, springbok and especially black rhinos can often be observed here at close range – an experience that has made the camp internationally renowned.

Accommodation at Okaukuejo Restcamp
The name “Okaukuejo” originates from the Herero language and roughly translates as “place of the women.” Originally, the site served as a military outpost during the German colonial era before later becoming part of the national park.
The resort offers a wide range of accommodation options, from simple double rooms to spacious chalets overlooking the waterhole. Facilities include five Premier Waterhole Chalets, thirty Waterhole Chalet double rooms, twenty Bush Chalets with barbecue facilities, two family chalets with private cooking and braai areas, as well as two wheelchair-accessible chalets. Campsites are also available for self-drivers and travellers with rooftop tents. The camp infrastructure is complemented by restaurants, a bar, shop, kiosk and swimming pool.
Activities and tours at Okaukuejo Restcamp
Morning and evening game drives are offered, providing excellent opportunities to experience the park’s wildlife when animals are most active. In addition, the camp’s waterhole itself is considered one of the best places in southern Africa for independent wildlife viewing without joining guided excursions. Photographers and nature enthusiasts especially appreciate the peaceful evening atmosphere when rhinos and elephants gather at the illuminated waterhole.
